It is hard to say who and where invented Blackjack, or is it even possible to answer that question.
What we can say is the fact there are some evidence that the first card games were played in China, and the first cards are made there.
Over the centuries, world travelers manage to bring those cards to other parts of the world, and all the countries involved made their contribution to their appearance.
As much as we know, the cards traveled from China through the Middle East countries to Europe.
Some game experts say that the game known as Hazard was the first game that became popular in Europe, and that this particular game is the real predecessor of games like poker or blackjack.
Possible Predecessors
The others say there were other games that can be related to blackjack. Many countries would like to be the real origin of the popular game.
For example, Spanish game 'Veintiuno', mentioned by Cervantes, played back in 1700s, can be a candidate for the position of blackjack's predecessor. The word means 21, just like the French name for the similar game, 'Vingt-et-un', which was very popular in the 18th century in France.
Italian game 'Trentuno' has the best chances so far, cause it was played in the 15th century, and it was the first game based on some numerical goal that had to be achieved.
The History of Blackjack Rules
The mentioned French card game 'Vingt-et-un' was, nevertheless, the base for establishing the rules for blackjack game. Considering the rules present today, the amazing thing is that only two options did not exist in the old French version - the surrender option and the insurance option.
Blackjack in America
French immigrants brought the game to the US in the 19th century. Blackjack got the new, English name, but it was widely known simply as '21'.
The game wasn't so popular as the poker or Craps, but the casinos put it in their offer, with some additional payouts, and more people were attracted.
